Size: They are quite small, with early-stage nymphs measuring only about 1mm in length. Adult lengths vary, with some species being under an inch (approx. 25mm)
Habits: They live in soil, leaf mould, and beneath stones, logs, and bark. They are considered detritivores, feeding on decaying vegetation.
Humidity: Maintain a high level between 70–80%. Mist the enclosure every few days to keep the soil damp but not soggy.
Temperature: They thrive at room temperature, ideally around 20–24°C (68–75°F). Temperatures above 27°C (80°F) can be fatal.
Lighting: No special lighting is required; they are nocturnal and prefer subdued light or darkness.
Identification Challenges: Because many Polydesmus species look similar, accurate identification often requires examining the male gonopods (modified legs used for reproduction).
